British Era Sukkur Barrage

Sukkur barrage was built during the British Era in the period of King George v. Construction of barrage was start in 1923 and completed in 1932, It was build on River Indus in Sukkur City, Sindh. In British time Barrage name was Lloyd Barrage in the memories of Sir George Lloyd who was the Governor of Bombay. It was built for irrigation and it is still functional and supply water to different district and cities of Sindh province like Sukkur, Mirpurkhas/Tharparkar and Hyderabad. After Independence It is now locate in Pakistan.

Sindh province is entirely depends on Indus River and Sindh has little ground water availability. This irrigate the agriculture Land and control the water flow. It is backbone of country economy which is 25% of total irrigation of canal. The wall of Barrage have 66 spans each has 60ft wide and its weight of 50 tons. Its length is approximately 2 KM long. This canal is now maintaining by the Sindh Irrigation & Power Department.

Indus river has one of its kind species which is Indus river dolphins normally these dolphins have seen upstream of Barrage which is the beauty of Indus river, it is National mammal of Pakistan.
